Description
These outlandish, exotic looking creatures were drawn in the early 1700s by Louis Renard (c. 1678-1746), a book dealer and spy for the British Crown, with a keen interest in tropical fish. He apparently drew them without ever having set foot outside of Europe, by using dried specimens brought back from the Moluccas Islands near Indonesia or from verbal firsthand descriptions. Some have almost human faces! Louis Renard was born in France but immigrated to the Netherlands with his family around the turn of the century in order to escape religious persecution and eventually became a citizen of Amsterdam.
